Chianti, located in the Tuscany region of central Italy, is home to probably the best known of all Italian wine districts, closely associated with red wines made from the Sangiovese grape. Since 1996, Chianti DOCG wines must contain a minimum of 70 percent Sangiovese. At the same time, producers were allowed for the first time to release pure Sangiovese Chianti wines and not be obliged to include inferior or international varieties in the blend. Chianti Classico wines must have 80 percent of the main variety. The native varieties Canaiolo and Colorino are allowed as blending partners, as are the international varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and Syrah. The two Cabernets may account for only 15 percent between them. The wines are characterized by red and black cherry characters, along with savory notes, wild herbs and spices, supported by lively acidity and well-structured tannins. Today, Chianti is a source of world-class wines.
