"Not surprisingly, this is another fantastic example from Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. If pure, with thickness and glycerin are the characteristics you're looking for, there is no more apt Chardonnay in the world. The only thing I have seen from the new world that comes close to a wine like this with similar richness was the 1978 and 1980 Chalone, but that winery has now resorted to much lighter, more commercially oriented products. There is nothing commercial about this 1989 Montrachet. Here is a bottle that will offer a fantastic nose of honey, butter, apple fruit, interwoven with smoky nutty aromas and toasty new oak. In the mouth it is almost unctuous in its extraordinary viscosity, thickness and richness. The finish is explosive, and although the alcohol should be above 13.5 percent, it cannot be detected because of the wine's phenomenal concentration."
