Legend has it that Mercurey was named after the Roman god of commerce, Mercury, perhaps because of a Roman temple in the Premier Cru "Clos de Voyens" vineyard. Today, Mercurey is the most important village appellation in the Côte Chalonnaise, as well as the largest in the region. Most of the wine is labeled at the village level or comes from one of the 32 Premier Cru sites. The "golden valley" protects the vineyards from humidity. Pinot Noir wines are rich, robust and tannic, while Chardonnay, though less produced, is distinguished by its flint-like minerality.
