Châteauneuf-du-Pape is a historic wine region located between the cities of Orange and Avignon in the southern Rhône Valley in France. It is famous for its powerful, full-bodied red wine, largely made from the classic southern Rhône grape trio of Grenache-Syrah-Mourvèdre. Grenade is the main variety of Châteauneuf-du-PapeThe archetypal Châteauneuf vineyard is scattered with large pebbles known as galets. These stones prevent the evaporation of water from the soil surface and encourage the reflection of sunlight into the canopy. Despite its Mediterranean climate, the appellation is technically the driest in the entire Rhone Valley.
