Blaye-Côtes de Bordeaux is the appellation title for Cotes de Bordeuax wines produced specifically in the Blaye district, just across the Gironde from the Medoc . The wines are both red and white (any rosé produced here is sold under the generic designation of Bordeaux). Wines once produced under the appellation Premières Côtes de Blaye are now sold under this new title. The exact blend of each Blay-Côtes de Bordeaux wine depends on several factors. These include the target market and style of wine, the existing varieties planted in the vineyards, and the precise terroir Of those vineyards. Those sites with clay soils, for example, are better suited to Merlot and are likely to create softer, more supple wines for early consumption. Those on gravelly soils will favor Cabernet varieties, which are likely to create more structured wines with levels of tannin higher - wines that will require and reward some years of aging.
