A small wine region, often compared to neighboring Ghemme, Gattinara produces oxy-dry Nebbiolo from the foothills of the Alps. Gattinara DOCG is an appellation for dry red wines, predominantly Nebbiolo, produced in the municipality of the same name in Italy in the northwestern region of Piedmont. Gattinara wines must contain at least 90 percent Spanna, the local name for Nebbiolo. The wines themselves usually range from orange to garnet in color, and have a rustic nature and an aromatic bouquet reminiscent of violets. The wine's reputation for exceptional longevity is due to its very prominent tannins and high acidity.
