Cabernet Sauvignon - 2013 - Davies Vineyards
Diamond Mountain is the northernmost mountain designation in the Mayacamas range, located on the northwest side of the valley floor above the city of Calistoga. The vineyards, planted at elevations ranging from 400 to 2,200 feet, benefit from excellent sun exposure, often above the coastal fog line, and are cooled by Pacific Ocean breezes in the morning and late afternoon. Although the AVA (American Viticultural Area) covers 5,000 acres, only slightly more than 500 acres are devoted to viticulture. The soils, consisting mainly of red sedimentary rocks and decomposed volcanic ash, are low in fertility and drain rapidly, producing small, thick-skinned, tannin-rich grapes. Here Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Zinfandel achieve excellent results. Rudy von Strasser pioneered the application for AVA appellation recognition for Diamond Mountain in 1999.
