The Vega Sicilia vineyard, planted on predominantly limestone soils similar to those of Burgundy, is known for producing one of the world's greatest wines. The name, contrary to what one might think, has no connection with Sicily, but comes from the Santos Sicilia family, the vineyard's previous owners, and the Spanish term "Vega," meaning "valley." On a 1,000-hectare property, located at an altitude of 700 meters above the Duero River, 210 hectares are dedicated to vines. Bordeaux varieties (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Malbec) occupy 20%, while Tempranillo has returned to dominate with 80%. The climate is continental, with an Atlantic influence. The particularity of Vega Sicilia lies in its unique and often controversial aging process. The wines initially mature in large oak barrels for a year, and are then transferred to barrels of different sizes and ages. The aging period, which varies from five to ten years, softens the powerful character of the wine. Some old vintages have aged for over 25 years in barrels, but today the estate adopts a more classic method, limited to about ten years.
