The Champagne region, located in northeastern France, is famous for the production of the renowned sparkling wine. Viticulture in the area is mainly based on three grape varieties: Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The traditional method used to produce Champagne is the "méthode champenoise." This process involves a double fermentation: the first takes place in stainless steel barrels and the second in bottles, where sugar and yeast are added for natural fermentation. During maturation, the bottles are periodically rotated and tilted, a process known as "remuage," to ensure an even distribution of sediment. Vines planted on limestone soils give the wine its distinctive complexity and sophistication, creating an effervescent beverage admired around the world.
