Diamond Mountain is the northernmost mountain appellation in the Mayacamas range, located on the northwest side of the valley floor above the city of Calistoga. The vineyards, planted at elevations ranging from 400 to 2,200 feet, enjoy excellent sun exposure, often above the coastal fog line, and are cooled by morning and late afternoon breezes from the Pacific Ocean. Although the AVA (American Viticultural Area) covers 5,000 acres, only a little more than 500 acres are dedicated to viticulture. The soils, composed primarily of red sedimentary rock and decomposed volcanic ash, are infertile and drain quickly, producing small, thick-skinned grapes that are rich in tannins. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot and Zinfandel do well here. Rudy von Strasser was a pioneer in seeking AVA recognition for Diamond Mountain in 1999.
