A small wine region often compared to nearby Ghemme, Gattinara produces dry Nebbiolo from the foothills of the Alps. Gattinara DOCG is an appellation for dry red wines, predominantly Nebbiolo, produced in the homonymous municipality in Italy. in the northwestern region of Piedmont. Gattinara wines must contain at least 90% Spanna, the local name for Nebbiolo. The wines themselves usually range from orange to garnet in color, and have a rustic nature and an aromatic bouquet reminiscent of violets. The wine's reputation for exceptional longevity is thanks to its very strong tannins and high acidity.
